The Olympic Development Program was formed in 1977 to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develop a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.

Approximately 94% of the players making up the United States Women’s U20 National team pool in 2006 participated in the ODP program as youth players.  Also, 20 of 21 American starters in the 2006 NCAA Division 1 National Championship game participated in ODP.

US Youth Soccer is divided into four regions, each offering a regional camp for state association ODP teams in all eligible age groups. The camps are designed to provide high-level competition and training.  During the sessions and competitions, players who are capable of performing at a higher level of play are identified for possible national team camp, pool, or team participation.

ODP offers players a variety of opportunities on top of what the Legacy provides.  Participating in ODP will aid in player development by offering the opportunity to train and play with the best player's in one's age group.  It also supplies quality instruction from nationally licensed coaches, top-flight competition with games against other state association ODP teams, and provides a great opportunity to be scouted by college coaches from across the country.
