This past Saturday the TOPSoccer program began. Over 20 people gathered around to participate and support the brand new program. The players started with 30 minutes of guided learning through the demonstration of specific techniques and then given the opportunity to play small sided games for the second half hour. Several Legacy athletes were in attenandance for the start of the program and jumped in, making it a great atmosphere for the players and parents to see every level of the club and community playing together.
The TOPSoccer program is a US Youth Soccer community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, organized by youth soccer association volunteers. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, who has a mental physical disability. Boys and girls age four and older will now have the opportunity to learn and play soccer at their own level. Players will be grouped based on size, age, and ability level, and includes those with wheelchairs, walkers, and other assistive devices.
The program combines the mission of Virginia Legacy (To provide fun, dynamic, and inspiring soccer experiences for youth players of all ages and ability levels) and The Arc of Greater Williamsburg (To improve the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through community activities and advocacy) so that every child gets the opportunity to experience the joy of playing soccer.
